Set during the cradle of Hasidism in White Russia (Belarus), Chaim is a widowed fabric merchant caring for his children, earning the deep respect and esteem of all his fellow villagers. Sasha the tailor accumulates heavy debts to Chaim and struggles to repay them. When Chaim comes to collect what he is owed, Sasha refuses to pay. Chaim attempts to at least reclaim some of the fabrics he previously sold, but in the ensuing struggle between the two, Chaim falls and loses consciousness. Believing he has killed the merchant, a panicked Sasha decides to bury him, hiding the body in his shed in the meantime. Soon after, Chaim wakes up, only to find himself locked inside. Andrei, Sasha's mentally challenged son who had frequently been helped by Chaim in the past, assists in freeing him, and the two decide to flee into the forest. When Sasha discovers their escape, he resolves to rid himself of both of them and sets out to hunt them down deep in the woods. At that very same moment, the Rebbe enters Chaim’s home and begins reciting Psalms with his young, tender children...
